Micro 4/3rds with the Panasonic GX9

Updated: Aug 3, 2022

The GX9 with Panasonic lenses: 20mm/f1.7, 14-45mm and 45-150mm kit zooms. It all fits into a small Nova Mini AW bag.

Having revisited micro four thirds with my old Panasonic G1 I decided to upgrade to a Panasonic GX9. As I said in my last post my knees are painful and a lighter kit has become necessary. The knee is getting better having visited a physiotherapist and started some exercises, but I am told it may be 6 months before I can say I have fully recovered.

The GX9 is a great camera and I am so far impressed with the image quality from the 20MP sensor. It is a little noisier than my Sony A7RII but nothing that cannot be fixed with a little noise reduction. Coming from a film background I don’t mind some noise in any case. Also the new AI based noise reduction programs I have been testing can do a great job with high ISO images. These include Topaz Denoise AI, Deep Prime from DXO and the new Nonoise AI from On1.

However, I am finding that for ISOs of 200 to 1600 the noise reduction in Lightroom or Capture One is sufficient for the sizes I print at (mainly 12×16 and 16×20).

Here are some examples:
